Team\nSahlen<\/strong>, presented by\nhoneybeeBase.com, <\/strong>returned to Watkins Glen International, after having just\nraced at the track a few weeks earlier in the <\/strong>Sahlen\u2019s Sports Car Springfest at the Glen with the Summit\nRacing \u2013 American Endurance Racing series. \n <\/strong>In this previous event, Team Sahlen had\nsecured the double OVERALL victory in the Saturday & Sunday 8 hour Enduro\nevents.  With this high mark, Team Sahlen\nknew they had their work cut out for them to duplicate such a mark.  Coming fully prepared, Team Sahlen brought\ntheir trusty #941 \u201cCharcoal\u201d Mazda RX7 as well as the #942 \u201cKetchup\u201d and #943 \u201cMustard\u201d\nPorsche Boxsters.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday\nwas set to be Technical Inspection in the Morning and Open Practice in the\nafternoon.  Mother Nature had different\nideas, and the entire afternoon was called off due to severe fog during what\nbecame a torrential rainstorm.  Visibility\nwas so bad, that the crew could not see the grandstands on the front straight\nfrom pit road.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday\narrived with continued rain,,but with no fog, which allowed the race to start\nat 9 am.  With temperatures in the mid\n50s and a very wet track, and 85 race cars on track, the Team Sahlen racers did\ntheir best to tip toe around the circuit in the early laps of the race, working\nto get heat into their 200w rated tires. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the race\nrolled into the 2nd<\/sup> and 3rd<\/sup> hours, Team Sahlen positioned\ninto the Top 5 slots on track, working to take advantage of full course cautions\nto gain track position.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Running\nstrong all day in the top 20, the #941 \u201cCharcoal\u201d had the misfortune at the 6 hour\nmark to have the alternator expire, ending a strong run for the day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 45\nMinutes to go, the #942 \u201cKetchup\u201d was in 1st<\/sup> place, a lap up on the\nfield.  The #943 \u201cMustard\u201d was in 3rd<\/sup>\nplace, right behind the Tuttle Mitsubishi. \nA full on race to the checkered flag saw \u201cMustard\u201d sneak by the Tuttle\nracer, to ensure at Team Sahlen 1st<\/sup> & 2nd<\/sup> Place\nOVERALL for the Saturday 7 hour event.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joe\nSahlen shared his thoughts on the day – \u201cWhat an amazing day of racing.  We battled all race long to stay in the Top\n5,  Then in the last 1\/3rd<\/sup> of\nthe race, we just seemed to distance ourselves from the pack as our competitors\nfound misfortune.  To have won OVERALL in\n2 different Endurance series event here this spring at the Glen is incredible.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday\ndawned with a damp but drying track, and temperatures a bit warmer than\nSaturday.  These conditions meant the\nrace pace would be considerably faster than the day before.  The Team Sahlen racers were up to the challenge,\nand continued to strike hard every lap to stay in the Top 5.  Leading at the halfway point in the race, the\n#943 \u201cMustard\u201d was poised to contend for the overall victory.  As the race neared the final hours, a green\nflag pit stop put the Porsche Boxster in a position of fighting to stay on the\nlead lap.  At the Checkered Flag, \u201cMustard\u201d\ndid stay on the lead lap, securing 2nd<\/sup> OVERALL.  The #942 \u201cKetchup\u201d received the standard 1\nlap Victor\u2019s Penalty for winning the Saturday race.  Despite this slight handicap, \u201cKetchup\u201d was\nable to secure 3rd<\/sup> Place OVERALL, just one lap down to the\nleader.  The #941 \u201cCharcoal\u201d had a\nredemptive day, running all 7 hours and crossing the line in 21st<\/sup> position,\nbeating out 64 other competitors. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joseph\nSahlen shared his thoughts after the race \u2013 \u201cWhat a fun race this was\ntoday.  Old Charcoal ran like a dream all\nday.  You could drive this RX7 anywhere\non track, and it just handled great everytime.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nThe next event for Team Sahlen will be the <\/strong>July 17th<\/sup> \u2013 18th<\/sup> <\/strong>Tire Rack \u2013 ChampCar Endurance Series<\/strong> event at Nelson Ledges Road Course. The\nevent will include an 8 hour enduro on Saturday, to be followed up with a 7\nhour enduro on Sunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
