Team Sahlen, presented by\nhoneybeeBase.com, entered their <\/strong>2nd<\/sup> <\/strong>event of the season at <\/strong>Watkins Glen International in the Sahlen\u2019s\nSports Car Springfest at the Glen with the <\/strong>Summit Racing \u2013 American Endurance Racing series.  <\/strong> The team spent Friday working on fine tuning\ntheir set ups on both the #43 \u201cRetro\u201d and #42 \u201cPepper\u201d.  The efforts of the crew were rewarded as both\nthe Audi R8 GT3 LMS Ultra and the Porsche Cayman GT4 secured pole position in\nboth Class 5 and Class 4.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday\nmorning dawned with dark skies and rain drizzle coming down.  During the early 1st<\/sup> hour of the race,\nboth Team Sahlen racers contested at the front of the field.  A spin in the #42 \u201cPepper\u201d saw slight contact\nwith the wall that resulted in a loose radiator fitting and a trip to the\ngarage.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The #43 \u201cRetro\u201d\ncontinued making great progress leading the pack.  Always in the Top 3 overall.  In mid afternoon, the track dried out, and the\npace picked up for everyone.  The battle\nbetween Random Vandals BMW and Team Sahlen\u2019s Audi became very intense.  Then in the final hour of the race, the rains\ncame back, and multiple yellow ensued.  The\nfinal yellow flag came at the end of the race, with 1 lap green flag dash to\nthe checkered flag.  Joe Sahlen led the\npack to green, and ran the lap of his life in damp conditions to hold off the\nRandom Vandals BMW by less than a second at the Checkered Flag.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joe\nSahlen shared his thoughts after the race \u2013 \u201cWhat an amazing race.  This might be the most memorable drive of my\nracing through the years.  The Random\nVandals BMW is a formidable competitor, and I knew that I had to hit my marks\nin every turn on the last lap to hold them off. \nAnd being on a damp track did not make the task any easier.  Wow and to have this win come at our home\ntrack of Watkins Glen in the Sahlen\u2019s Sports Car Springfest at the Glen just\nmakes it all the more special.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday\ndawned with sunny skies.  Both Team Sahlen\nracers were ready to go and took the start. \nAnd for the 1st<\/sup> 2 hours of the event, both the #43 \u201cRetro\u201d\nand #42 \u201cPepper\u201d battled in the Top 3 in the Class 5 and 4 respectively.  At the 3 hour mark, contact with the wall put\nthe #42 \u201cPepper\u201d out of the race for the 2nd<\/sup> day in a row.  This left the honor of Team Sahlen to be\nupheld by the Audi R8 GT3 LMS Ultra.  And\nas the hours counted on, the #43 \u201cRetro\u201d continued to lay down solid fast\nlaps.  The blue skies and dry track gave\nway to cold, rainy weather at the 6 hour mark. \nThe track became almost undriveable at one point, with many, many cars\nsliding off in the infamous blue armco of the Glen.  Wayne Nonnamaker, grasping the perspective of\na 3 lap lead with 30 minutes to go, cautiously made his way around the track,\nhydroplaning several times each lap.  As the\nvery wet checkered flag flew, the <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wayne\nNonnamaker shared his thoughts \u2013 \u201cIn all my years of racing, this has to be one\nof the most diabolical conditions I have faced. \nThe Audi was hydroplaning several times a lap.  There was a lot of oil on the track, making\nit very slippery.  I am just glad we were\nable to come home in one piece,,and also collect the OVERALL victory along the\nway.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the\ndouble victory, Wayne Nonnamaker moved to the top of the Stable Energies Driver\nChampionship in the Summit Racing \u2013 American Endurance Racing Series. Additionally,\nJoe Sahlen leaped to 5th<\/sup> in the standings. As well, the #43 \u201cRetro\u201d\nmoved up to the lead in the Team Championship in the series. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


\n<\/strong>The next event for Team\nSahlen will be the May <\/strong>29th<\/sup> and 30th<\/sup> <\/strong>Sahlen\u2019s <\/strong>Champyard DOG at the Glen with the Tire Rack \u2013\nChampCar Endurance Series. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
