< Back to News Home Team Sahlen secures Fourth 2nd Place finish of the year

Posted (08/11/2014) -

By securing their Fourth 2nd Place finish in 5 races, Team Sahlen assumed the lead of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge

The weekend started off with a Test Day on Thursday.  This day was focused upon getting the right set up on the car for the long sweeping turns of Road America.  This paid off in practice one as Wayne Nonnamaker set the fastest time of the session.  This was followed up with a 6th best time in the 2nd session.

Will Nonnamaker could not get things worked out in Qualifying, and had one of his worst starting slot the season with a 23rd in ST.  This would turn to fortunate as the race started.

Will Nonnamaker further explains - “I had a terrible qualifying session.  Sometimes though it’s better to be lucky than good.  And in this case, being far back in the pack helped us avoid the big wreck at the start.  On the 1st lap, coming into Turn 5, there was a big pile up at the front of the ST pack.  There were so many cars involved, that I moved up 7 spots by the time we came around under yellow to complete lap one!  This played perfectly into our strategy, and the long clean up allowed us to reach 20 minutes into the race, and then put Wayne in the car.”

Wayne Nonnamaker then took over with fresh rubber and a full load of fuel.  With a significantly decreased field to drive through, the strategy worked out well, as he moved through the pack, and was soon into the Top 10 in the race.   As the race neared the halfway mark, all the ST teams made their final pit stops.  Team Sahlen performed a flawless pit stop, and made up significant time on the competition.  The time gained on the pit stop moved Wayne up even further into 3rd place on the order.  A late race yellow bunched up the pack, and saw a duel to the finish.

“It looked like we might have another race of full green to the finish, but then we had a late caution, and that just led to more cautions.  I was able to fend of tough challenges from behind while still charging hard on those in front of me.  In the end, I am very happy with our 2nd place result.” – shared Wayne Nonnamaker

The Road America event will be will be tape delayed aired on FoxSports1 on August 17th at 12 noon EDT.

The 2nd place finish moved Wayne into the lead of the ST Driver Championship.  With only 3 races remaining, each race becomes more and more important.

The next event for Team Sahlen will be at Virginia International Raceway on August 22nd at 12:15 pm EDT.
