< Back to News Home Kansas end of back to back race weekends for Team Sahlen

Posted (08/13/2013) -

NASCAR teams are all too familiar with back to back race weekends in their 30+ race weekend schedule, but in the world of sports car racing, this is a bit of an oddity.  This is due to the factor that unlike NASCAR, sports car teams only have one race car.  There is no swapping of a short oval for a road course vehicle between races.  No, sports car teams must re-prep their vehicles each time out.  And with this being endurance racing, there is more prep required than a simple 45 minute sprint race would require.  This extra effort will put a premium on the crew in getting ready for Kansas.

“Back to back races are always tough on the crew.  This means extra time away from home and families.  Logistics have to be prepared in advance for both events.  And while the cars are being re-prepped, it will be under the tent at Road America, not in the comfortable confines of the race shop, where all the necessary tools would potentially be available.” – shared Team Manager Jay Chapman

Uniquely, this event will be starting at 8 pm on Saturday night under the lights.  Even more uniquely, the qualifying will occur at 9:45 pm on Friday night.  Joe Nonnamaker shared his thoughts, “Qualifying at 9:45 on Friday night is actually 10:45 pm back in Ohio.  It’s a good thing I raced a Chump Car event a few weeks ago that ended at 10 pm,  that at least got me used to some nice driving”

Sharing driving duties with Joe Nonnamaker in the #43 machine at Kansas will be his oldest son Will.  The duo have the oldest combined average age in the Daytona Prototype class at 53 years.

In the #42 BMW Powered Daytona Prototype will be the “Wayne & Dane Show”. The duo have had some ups and downs during the 2013 season, but hope to look towards high finishes as the year comes to a close.

The SFP Grand Prix will be on Saturday August 17th at 8 pm.  The 2 hour and 45 minute event will be televised live on SPEED TV.
