< Back to News Home Team Sahlen working hard to drive Mazda to the top of the ROLEX GT Manufacturer Championship

Posted (04/21/2012) -

The 2012 race season is very young, but when it comes to the battle for the ROLEX GT Manufacture Championship, every race counts.  In 2010, Mazda secured their first ROLEX GT Manufacturer Championship.  Then in a bid to repeat as Champion, Mazda came up just short of the title.  In the very last race of the year, with 15 minutes to go in the race, Mazda was 1, 2 & 3 in the race.  This finish would have secured the title for Mazda.  Unfortunately, this was not to be, and Mazda only finished 2nd in the race, which lost the title by the narrowest of margins.  Now only 2 races into the 13 race schedule, and Mazda sees themselves in 2nd place, only 5 points out of 1st.   This 2nd place in the standings is the result of a fantastic victory by #70 SpeedSource Mazda.

For this weekend’s Grand Prix of Miami, Team Sahlen arrives at the event with 2 Mazda RX-8s fully prepared to assist in this challenge to bring the title back to Mazda.

Driving the #42 Team Sahlen Mazda RX-8 will be the tandem Wayne Nonnamaker and Dane Cameron.  This tandem has famously taken on the nickname – “The Wayne & Dane Show”.  Dane Cameron shares his thoughts leading into the weekend – “For me getting to Homestead is about redemption. The end result at barber wasn't representative of the speed and skill this team has to show. I am ready to get to Homestead and show that Wayne and I will be contenders every weekend with a strong finish. Homestead is usually races well and is also very hard on tires so I am hopeful that we can take what we learned at Barber and make it even a bit better.”

In Team Sahlen’s #43 Mazda RX-8 will be the father /son duo of Joe & Will Nonnamaker.  Will shared his desire to assist Mazda - “I am looking forward to coming to Homestead.  Last year we came so close to the Manufacturer Title.  Hopefully Team Sahlen can be of great assistance and strike on the competition at the Grand Prix of Miami to drive Mazda to the top of the points standings.  This is a very unique track to drive.  It may seem very simplistic  to drive, but there are so many nuances to get right to extract that last few tenths.”

The Grand Prix of Miami will start at 1 pm on Sunday, April 29th.  Live TV coverage will air on SPEED TV.
