< Back to News Home 1st race for Soap Box Derby Racer

Posted (03/12/2012) -
This past weekend marked the 1st race event for the Team Sahlen Soap Box Derby racer. With it still being winter in Ohio, the event was held indoors at a facility in Dover, Ohio. Amazingly, there were families from Buffalo, Chicago and Virginia who drove in for the event. In the Stock Class alone there was 28 entries.

Hot Dog Boy did a fantastic job driving the car down the track. He didn't hit any guardrails, or cross over and hit the other racers. And for Ian's 1st time efforts behind the wheel, the Tuscarawas County Soap Box Organization awarded him with a Trophy commemorating the rookie event.

The days was all good fun for the Nonnamaker family, despite being a very long day.  The Toterhome left Canton at 6:30 am, to be there in time to unload and go through tech at 8 am.  Then there were practice runs, before the actual races started.  The Saturday event was a double header, with 2 full races.  This put the loading process to 7:30 pm and arriving back home at 8:30.

"We learned a lot at this event.  I never realized that the aiming of the Soap Box racer down the hill would be so critical.  1/4" either way on the placement of the rear tires compared to the front relative to the track run makes all the difference.  Some racers even had designated "Aimers" whose whole job was to aim 4-5 different Soap Box Racers during each event.  Best news is that as a family we really had fun building the racer and look forward to doing more events in the future."
