< Back to News Home Team Sahlen runs tough until mid-race altercation at Mid-Ohio CONTINENTAL Tire ST event

Posted (06/26/2010) -

Having tested at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course three times in the spring,Team Sahlen was very prepared for the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge event.

The team even entered the Thursday Test Day to get some extra track time in before the race weekend started.  Both Joe Sahlen and Will Nonnamaker were able to get in some good laps, and establish some very competitive times.

Practice Day was very congested with over 60 cars on the track at the same time.  Team Sahlen continued to work on race set up and setting up for the big race.  In Qualifying, Joe Sahlen was able to establish a very solid time, ahead of full 1/3 of the race pack in ST.

At the start of the event, Joe Sahlen had an amazing start, moving up through the pack.  A yellow flag at the 30 minute mark, Team Sahlen pitted the #43 MAZDASPEED3 for a splash of fuel.  This allowed Joe Sahlen to be able to go back out and run while others had to pit at around the 1 hour mark.  This put Joe into the Top 10 in ST.  Joe was running some very strong lap times and was holding pace with the pack.  Unfortunately, at this point a ST competitor made a pass on Joe in the last turn. After the pass being completed on the front straightaway, the two cars collided, forcing the passing car off the track.

Soon thereafter, Joe handed the reigns over to Will Nonnamaker to bring the #43 home.  Will proceed to drive hard and brought the MAZDASPEED3 home in 17th.

“The incident on track was rather unfortunate.  For the #43 MAZDASPEED3, it knocked the alignment out of the left front.  And at a right hand turn track like Mid-Ohio, this made for rather difficult driving.  Joe did a great job and I know that we are poised for a great run in the MAZDASPEED3 in the very near future." - stated Will Nonnamaker

The next event for Team Sahlen in the MAZDASPEED3 will be the New Jersey Motorsports Park event on July 17th.
