< Back to News Home Team Sahlen to test both Mazda RX-8s at Daytona December test days

Posted (12/05/2009) -

Grand American's December Test Days at Daytona International Speedway will mark the 1st Time that Team Sahlen has taken the SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 on track.  Team Sahlen took delivery of their 1st RX-8 just after the Homestead ROLEX Season finale.  Then just a few weeks ago, Team Sahlen received the 2nd SpeedSource Mazda.

In that period since taking delivery, the crew at Team Sahlen has been busy getting ready.  Both RX-8s were re-prepped after their last out in at the Homestead race.  The #42 Mazda has also been re- branded and painted in the all so familiar Team Sahlen Red, Black and Yellow.  While the #43 will be in flat black, and receive its new paint coat before the January Test.

Team Sahlen driver Wayne Nonnamaker has already experienced driving a SpeedSource built Mazda RX-8, having driven with Racer's Edge Motorsports at the 2009 Barber Motorsports Park ROLEX event: "I really enjoyed my time driving the Mazda at Barber.  There was a bit of adjustment to driving style compared to what I have been driving in the GT class.  Hopefully that experience will beneficial in providing insight to Joe, Joe & Will as well as feedback to the crew."

Drivers Joe Sahlen & Will Nonnamaker have Mazda RX-8 experience.  That experience though was in the Team Sahlen KONI ST Class RX-8.  Joe Sahlen though, feels that this experience will be worth something in getting up to speed, "The Rotary motor requires a driver to have a unique way of ensuring you are able to utilize the power available.  This took some getting used to in our KONI ST Mazda.  So the style learned should be adaptable to the ROLEX GT RX-8."

One driver who has no Rotary experience is Joe Nonnamaker, "I am very excited about getting in the RX-8 at Daytona.  It has been such a long build up from making our announcement to now, that I can hardly wait to get behind the wheel."

In addition to re-preppping the RX-8s, the Team Sahlen crew has been very busy ensuring all support equipment is ready to go.  In fact, one of the most significant items will be a brand new Pit Cart/Timing & Scoring Stand.  Built in house, the Cart will serve to allow Team Sahlen to compete at the highest level of the ROLEX GT class.

The 2010 Team Sahlen ROLEX & KONI Challenge Series Campaign will be supported by Mazdaspeed, HRPWorld.com, HAWK Performance, Cool Shirt, TheRaceSite.com, Grassroots Motorsports, Holliday Canopies, Alcon, CM Racing, Genesis Technologies, Endurance Karting and SpeedSource Engineering.
