The Akron Racers went toe to toe with the first place Chicago Bandits (20-5) in front of nearly 1,500 fans at Firestone Stadium. For the 2009 season, Team Sahlen has partnered with the Akron Racers for many promotional programs. Included in those programs was the branding of the Racers' logo on the Corvette race car wing plates. With the night being the Subway Customer Appreciation Night, Will had the extra added bonus of being able to throw out the 1st pitch, albeit dressed up as Subman. Unlike his successful 1st pitch at the Subway night at the Akron Aeros Baseball night, Will was not quite as successful in throwing a softball underhanded. "You would have thought that throwing underhanded would have been easier, but for me that obviously was not the case. At least I had the cover of being Subman to make the bad throw. The catcher was gracious to give me the neon yellow softball, and I was able give that to our daughter Mia. Later on in the night, we were able to find the Racer's mascot Wheelie to sign the ball." - states Will Nonnamaker Once along the 3rd base line, the Nonnamakers soon realized the on field action was extra exciting when up close. So the family spent the remainder of the action packed game standing behind the mesh fence catching all the action. On a night where pitching dominated, it took a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning for the game to be decided. Crystl Bustos got the inning started with a one out line drive single to center field. Racers' manager Barb Sherwood then turned to her bench for the one and only time of the night, bringing Sari-Jane Jenkins in to pinch run for Bustos. Chicago's starter, Eileen Canney, then inflicted some damage to her own cause. Canney walked Kaitlin Cochran and Jamee Juarez back to back to load the bases, and end her night. Chicago dipped into their bullpen with Brandice Balschmiter entering a tough jam. Balschmiter only got to face one batter as Jenny Topping drove a fly ball to straight away center field that was deep enough to bring Jenkins home to score the winning run. After the game, the Racers had an autograph session for the fans along the 1st base line. Young Ian Nonnamaker was able have his Akron Racers Pennant signed by the players and coaches. This made for an excellent finish to the night. In the end the Nonnamaker family had a very good time, and was back home after the game in a very short 15 minutes after getting in the car. |
