< Back to News Home Buffalo Bill's Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas to be the Official Starter of the Sahlen's 6 Hours of the Glen

Posted (06/02/2008) - New York Race Fans at this year's Sahlen's 6 Hours may see a familiar face from Sunday's gone by, waving the Green Flag. Bill's Hall of Famer Running Back Thurman Thomas will be the official Starter of this years's Sahlen's event.

Beyond waving the Green Flag for the start of the Sahlen's 6 Hours, Thomas will be involved in several activities during the weekend. Thurman will attend the Saturday Meeting for ROLEX DP and GT Drivers. Then at the end of the race, he will be assisting in handing out the trophy's to the race winners. And Thurman will be in attendance to help judge the Saturday evening Sahlen Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Having been a life long Bills fan, it is very exciting to have Thurman waving the Green Flat for the race we are sponsoring. We have been a long time season ticket holder and have been the Official Hot Dog of the Bills for several years." - states Joe Sahlen

Joe Sahlen will also be a very active participant in the weekend's activities. Beyond serving as the official sponsor for the event, Joe will be co-driving the #42 Team Sahlen Corvette with Will Nonnamaker in the 6 hour event. (www.teamsahlen.com)

Outside of the race weekend, Sahlen's is currently partnered with Thurman through his Thurman Thomas Sports Training, via the Sahlen Sports Park. Located just outside of Buffalo, New York, the Sahlen Sports Park is a 180,000 SQ/FT Multi sport indoor facility with three open and one boarded field, a fitness center, soccer store and the park cafe. Recreational and advanced programs as well as leagues are offered for kids and adults in Soccer, Lacrosse, Flag football, Softball and field hockey.     Thurman Thomas Bio:
    Not only one of the first great, modern-era running backs, Thurman Thomas, unequivocally, is also one of the greatest complete running backs of all time. The "Thurmanator" - as Thomas was affectionately dubbed by ESPN's Chris Berman - did everything out of the backfield. Sure he did the glory work - but unlike most modern offensive stars - he also did the tough, dirty work that made his teams better. Thurman was durable and strong as an every-down back; he could handle 20-25 carries a game and possessed the ability to run either between the Tackles or to the outside. Thomas was also one of the greatest pass-catching running backs of all time and was a fantastic backfield blocker on passing downs.

    Some of Thomas' contemporaries might have rushed for slightly more yardage; few, however also possessed the ability to turn a catch out of the backfield into a key first down or to stay in on the third down and throw a key block. As a testament to his completeness as a running back, when Thurman Thomas retired only the great Walter Payton had posted more total yards from scrimmage in a career. Thomas also ranked ninth on the NFL career rushing list at the time of his retirement with 12,074 yards.
    Thomas is also the all time leading rusher in Buffalo Bills team history and still owns many individual Bills team records. He was a key cog in the Buffalo Bills' dominance of the AFC in the early 1990's, as Thurma
