< Back to News Home CAP CHAT - JOE SAHLEN

Posted (06/01/2008) - "After watching the Team Sahlen race cars over the past 4 seasons, you would expect nothing else but Lighting bolts from the helmet of Joe Sahlen.

"When we went to design my helmet, I wanted to have the Lighting bolts as the main theme to the helmet." Joe Sahlen said of his helmet, "Grand American race fans have grown accustomed to associating the distinctive yellow bolt to the Sahlen race team."

Joe Sahlen started racing in 2005, driving a Porsche 911 in the Grand Sports class, in what is now the KONI Challenge Series. Joe drives a Chevrolet Corvette in the ROLEX Grand American GT class with his co-driver Will Nonnamaker. Joe also currently competes in the drive in the KONI Challenge Street Tuner class. For 2008, Team Sahlen traded in their Dodge SRT-4 for a Mazda RX-8 in the ST class.

"Across the front of the helmet, we had soccer balls, in shadow design, painted into the helmet. The soccer balls are tribute to our Sahlen Sports Park in Buffalo, New York that our daughter Alex Sahlen assists in managing" - states Joe
(www.sahlensportspark.com) "And on each side of the helmet is the Sahlen's logo. The logo is exactly the same as when the company was created in 1869. Plus, in little shadow designs is the Sahlen logo across the back."

In addition to supporting and racing in the Grand American ROLEX and KONI series, Sahlens is also involved in sponsoring both the Sahlen's 6 Hours of the Glen and the Sahlen's Paddock Club.

"I really enjoy Grand American racing. The weekends are very professional, and yet fun at the same time. It's always fun getting to meet the fans at each track; especially at the autograph sessions. Often we meet fans who are long time loyal Sahlen Hot Dog eaters, and follow our team just because of that reason!" follow up Joe

Joe Sahlen's helmet was painted by Tony Lechner of www.Lechnerracingdesigns.com . Tony has also painted the helmets of Joe, Wayne and Will Nonnamaker. Lechner Racing Designs are not cluttered but elegant, and as individual as the driver. A race fan knows instantly who's helmet it is by the distinctive design. Lechner Racing Design works to develop and produce a product as individual as the person using it, with the goal of making the driver instantly recognizable.
