< Back to News Home Team Sahlen set for Top 10 until the end of Homestead race

Posted (04/15/2008) - Team Sahlen used the long break after the ROLEX 24 at Daytona to prepare and develop the HRPWorld.com Corvettes. Coming into Round 2 at Homestead, there were several new items the team planned to test.

In Qualifying, Will Nonnamaker and Joe Sahlen placed the #43 and #42 racers in 22nd and 23rd place out of 25 in class. Team Sahlen ran two different set ups on the cars, still working on the optimal set up.

For the race, Team Sahlen used crafty pit strategy to place high in the standings. At one point early in the race, #42 was in 2nd place with #43 just behind in 3rd. At about half distance, a spinning Mazda in turn one forced Wayne Nonnamaker to check up in the #43 Corvette. Unfortunately, the cars behind did not see the incident, slamming into the back of the Corvette. This forced #43 into the pits for repairs.

After having started the #43, Will had jumped into finish for Joe Sahlen in #42. Again, crafty pit strategy placed the #42 in 6th place with enough fuel to get to the end. Racing nose to tail with the factory efforts of the #06 Pontiac and #69 Mazda, Will set Team Sahlen's fastest lap of the weekend. Then, a oil cooler fitting to the Transmission worked loose, ending the day.

"Joe drove a fantastic opening stint. He gave me a car without a scratch on it. We were really looking good with all our stops already completed. Running in 6th was a good position. I can hardly wait until Virginia. I think we will be in a good position for a top 5."

After repairs, Wayne continued on, and proceeded to net a 20th place in class at the end.

"Although we are not coming home with a Top 10, the good news is that we were there in contention at the end of the race. That is great progress. And from what we learned this weekend, there are several more developments that are planned for the next event."
- states crew chief Mike Thomas

The next event for Team Sahlen will be Round 4 at Viriginia International Raceway on April 27th. Team Sahlen will not be attending the Mexico event the prior weekend, with the focus of the team to further develop and prepare the HRPWorld.com Corvettes to take on the best in the GT class.

The 2008 Team Sahlen ROLEX GT Campaign is support by HRPWorld.com, ZIP Products, HAWK Performance, Forgeline Wheels, TheRaceSite.com, TheRaceMarket.com, Grassroots Motorsports, Holliday Canopies, Alcon, CM Racing, Joe Gibbs Motor Oil, Genesis Technologies, and Corsa Performance.
