< Back to News Home Full Day of Test at Mid-Ohio Goes Well

Posted (12/21/2006) - On November 17th, Team Sahlen recently rented the entire Mid-Ohio track for a hands-on experience with their three practice Grand American Rolex GT machines. Practice with these three V8 machines at Mid-Ohio will give them a better feel for how their vehicles will handle when Team Sahlen makes their full time return to the Great American ROLEX series racing in the Grand Touring (GT) Class.

On a day with great weather, all four drivers, Joe Sahlen, Joe Nonnamaker, Wayne Nonnamaker and Will Nonnamaker, were able to test out the two GTOs and one Corvette and see what these V8 engines can do.

Based on a tube frame platform and powered by a General Motor V8 motor these vehicles are quite different than the precision of the Porsches the team drove last season. That's why it was crucial the drivers were able to practice and grow accustom to the roar of the engine and a feel for the car.

When the day was done, the cars ran great. Leaving the drivers and crew with a full day of observing how the cars handle and plenty of things to expect once they get behind the wheel of their Corvette Z06 race cars.

Based on his experience at Mid-Ohio, driver Wayne Nonnamaker's comfort level grew towards the new race cars while he drove around the track.

"We are really getting comfortable with these V8 machines. The cars are much different to drive. The Porsches gave you the feeling that you are driving a very refined piece of machinery. These tube frame General Motor cars rumble and growl and give you a feeling of driving a crude, but very competitive piece of machinery. You feel much more a part of the elements, your ears hurt after you are done, but the thrill and enjoyment of driving these cars definitely doesn't take a back seat to the Porsches."

While the engine, framing and overall feel may differ from the Porsches, Team Sahlen's enjoyment for racing and history on the track will guarantee them a thrilling and highly-competitive racing season.

Team Sahlen's races with the support of HRPWorld.com, GOJO, Kempthorn AutoMall, HAWK Performance, TheRaceSite.com, TheRaceMarket.com, Grassroots Motorsports, HOTSEAT, Holliday Canopies, CORSA, Alcon, CM Racing, and Racetech Seats.
