Posted (08/01/2006) - Team Sahlen battled severe heat, rain, and the Grand-Am Cup Grand Sport field during Saturday's Grand-Am Cup race at Barber Motorsports Park. Two of the three Team Sahlen cars were still on track during Saturday's race when rain, lightning, and high winds blew through the Birmingham track and caused concerned officials to call off the race. This disappointed Team Sahlen drivers and crew who packed up in the midst of the downpour but No. 44 driver Wayne Nonnamaker was particularly let down.

"We were up to 8th before we pitted. Had the race continued we would have made a run at a top five finish. We were hanging with Nextel Cup driver Boris Said as he made his way through the pack. We had a good run up to that point," Wayne Nonnamaker stated.

Wayne and co-driver, Joe Nonnamaker were in 12th place when officials called the race. The drivers of the No. 44 car received their final splash of fuel during a caution when the rain started. The Grand-Am Cup officials called the event before going back to green flag racing and the No. 44 car was unable to regain position.

"There was only one hour remaining when the yellow came out due to stranded cars on track. It's disappointing but considering the damage our trailer sustained during the Mid Ohio storm, we were happy Grand-Am took the necessary precautions. It was the right decision on their part for the safety of all involved," Wayne added.

Driving the Team Sahlen No. 40 car during the weekend was Tanner Baker, John Frederick, and Jonathan Miller. This was the first time all three men competed together in a Team Sahlen Porsche. The car sustained some damage late in the race but did well through the course of the weekend.

The Team Sahlen No. 43 car faced damage early on in the race when Joe Sahlen was struck by another GS car. This incident, which was started by a competitor behind Joe, sent the No. 43 car back to the paddock for the remainder of the day. The accident took three cars out of the race with a fourth continuing on despite damage to his car. Sahlen was unhurt but disappointed by the accident.

Team Sahlen now heads north to Trois Rivieres, Quebec for a split Grand-Am Cup race. The Street Tuner class race will be held on Saturday, August 5th at 1:30 PM EST. The Grand Sport class race will be held on Sunday, August 6th at 3:05 PM EST.
