< Back to News Home Team Sahlen Has Big Support at Mid Ohio, Survives Severe Thunderstorm

Posted (06/28/2006) - As Will Nonnamaker was rounding turns at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, he could not help but see groups of fans wearing red t-shirts. Throughout the paddock and grandstands at Mid Ohio, Team Sahlen fans were in full swing and decked out in Team Sahlen gear cheering on the Grand-Am Cup team.

Nonnamaker commented, "There were so many red Team Sahlen shirts at Mid Ohio, you could really tell that Team Sahlen support was everywhere."

Team Sahlen support was everywhere as were the Team Sahlen cars. With a total of five entries and eleven drivers in Sunday afternoon's Grand-Am Cup race, the team was very busy with their paddock setup, and preparation. However, inclement weather on Thursday afternoon reeked havoc on their paddock setup and their trailer awning.

"All of the sudden the weather really got bad and the wind started whipping up. This storm came in so quickly, no one had time to react. A big gust ripped our Holliday Canopies awning right off our trailer. That awning withstood a lot of bad weather but nothing compared to this. The wind also blew eleven of our pop up tents about a 100 feet. Luckily, no one got hurt and our cars just got a little bit wet. We had to reconfigure our paddock setup and quickly headed out to buy thirteen more popup tents. I think we bought the last popup tents in the city of Lexington, there may have been one or two left," stated team owner Joe Nonnamaker.

The storm did severe damage to the paddock area at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course. The Sahlen's Paddock Club was literally destroyed but with quick action and dedicated workers through the night, the Sahlen's Paddock Club was back in operation for Saturday and Sunday's race. A tractor trailer was flipped on its side in the Mid Ohio parking lot and several other teams had damage to their awning and tents. Fortunately, for Team Sahlen damage to the trailer and tents was all the team sustained.

"We were very lucky, it could have been far worse. We had a lot of people in attendance through the race weekend and no one seemed to mind the changes in our hospitality area. We just had to make due with what we had," added Nonnamaker.
