Posted (04/12/2006) - The Team Sahlen fuel man, infamous for jumping on the hood of the team's Porsche GT3 Cup cars, is ok after a scary incident in his Ford Focus Hatchback. Matt Brogan was en route to his home in Lafayette, Indiana when a deer struck his car. Brogan struggled to stop the vehicle when it went over a hill, went airborne, and then flipped several times. Brogan, who was wearing his seatbelt at the time, walked out of the accident with virtually no injuries.

Bill Pate, Brogan's father, and Team Sahlen Manager commented on the accident, "Matt has never really been 'ok,'" Pate joked, "but we are glad to see he didn't get hurt. He's very lucky."

Brogan's Ford Focus did not fair so well and was pulled to a salvage yard shortly after the incident.

"One second everything is fine and the next second a deer is at the end of my hood on my right headlight.," stated Brogan.

Brogan was rounding a blind turn less than a mile from his house when the deer jumped in front of his car.

"Bill always told me in a rollover situation grab the bottom of the wheel, brace yourself, get small in the car, and wait for the noise to stop. The thing was when the noise stoped, I opened my eyes and I was still airborne going over the hill. Needless to say I closed my eyes again and waited.," stated Brogan.

Brogan has been a valuable member of Team Sahlen since he was in elementary school. In addition to fueling the cars during races Brogan's primary responsibility with the team is setting up the pits, and timing table for Kris Nonnamaker.

"Matt's role on this team is very important and we are glad that he wasn't hurt as badly as he could have been. We don't know what we would do without him," stated Kris Nonnamaker.

In an ironic twist, Matt had bought the Ford Focus off of Mr. Sahlen. Joe had used the Focus for Track Time day events. In the two years that Joe had the car, it never had a scratch. Perhaps it might be suggested that it is safer to drive on the track than the street.

"It is way safer to drive on the track then on the street! I am upset that the car was destroyed, I loved it," added Brogan.
