Team Sahlen Makes Its Mark in Trois-Rivieres

Posted (08/09/2005) - Joe Sahlen, Will Nonnamaker, Joe Nonnamaker, and Wayne Nonnamaker heated up the Trois-Rivieres course in Quebec this past weekend. Success in both practice and the race itself made way for a 14th and 19th place finish in the Grand Sport class. The 1.521 mile track at Trois-Rivieres was very challenging for the Grand-Am Cup Grand Sport class. The tight course marked by concrete walls gave drivers little room for error and fans an exciting race. A yellow flag on the first lap of the race and several more throughout the second hour further magnified the difficulty level of the Trois-Rivieres track. An early problem with the right rear tire created an unplanned pit stop for Team Sahlen driver Joe Sahlen in the No. 43 Porsche. Will Nonnamaker jumped in the car but later returned to pit lane during a yellow to let his co-driver finish out the race. Sahlen moved up two positions during the last stretch of the race giving him and his partner a 14th place finish. The 14th place result meant that the No. 43 car improved 11 positions from its 25th place starting spot, the third best improvement of any car in the race. "I was pretty happy with my stint and Joe did an amazing job avoiding some pretty precarious situations," commented Will Nonnamaker. "I really concentrated hard on brake conservation so he would be able to finish out the race. If you lose your brakes on this course you are definitely in trouble and will more than likely end up in a wall," Nonnamaker concluded. Joe Nonnamaker had an excellent stint in the driver's seat of the Team Sahlen No. 40 car. He remained on the lead lap until a belt came off the motor resulting in a lengthy pit stop. Once the car was pitted Joe's son, Wayne, jumped in the driver's seat. Unable to regain the time lost while repairing the problem, the No. 40 Porsche finished the race in 19th place. "The belt coming off the motor is an odd failure but all we can figure is that the rough terrain on this circuit caused the belt to jump off the motor. I know there were times out there when I felt like I was jumping out of the seat so I could see how the belt might have been thrown. The track is an interesting circuit and there are a lot of enthusiastic fans. I always enjoy the excitement around this event," stated Wayne Nonnamaker. Team Sahlen will embark on their next Grand-Am Cup race August 28th at their home track, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
