< Back to News Home Team Sahlen Driver, Will Nonnamaker, Leads Drive For Bob Akin Award

Posted (05/18/2005) - Will Nonnamaker has returned to the ROLEX Grand American Series in 2005 with incredible ambitions. In 2004, due to an injury, Nonnamaker took a mid season hiatus. For 2005 Nonnamaker has participated in every race logging excellent times and considerable mileage. Nonnamaker has started as well as finished several races this season and is in hot pursuit of the Bob Akin Award.

"To win this award would be an honor, in both Bob Akin's memory and the way in which it is achieved. I am really working hard this season to get some good track time and to also finish on the podium. We are getting closer every race," states Nonnamaker.

Bob Akin was an intense, passionate driver, who had an incredible love of racing. Unfortunately in 2002, Bob Akin lost his life during a test at Road Atlanta. The award honoring Mr. Akin is given to a current driver in the ROLEX Grand American Series who has not counted racing as a primary income in the past five years. Points are calculated via the finishing position as well as gaining one point per mile driven.

Nonnamaker competes with his father, Joe, and younger brother, Wayne, in the ROLEX Grand American Series. Their Team Sahlen Porsche GT3 Cup cars are entered in the Grand Touring class . The team is also fielding a fleet of Porsche 996s in the Grand Sport class in defense of their 2003 and 2004 Grand Sport Team, Driver and Manufacturer's Championships.

In additional to his team's excellent achievements, Nonnamaker has himself claimed driver's championships. In 1999, Will and Wayne, took the Sport Touring championship. In 2001 Will took the Sport Touring championship alone and in 2002 he once again shared it with Wayne.

Nonnamaker drives with Team Sahlen with support from Rembrandt Charms, HRPWorld.com, TheRaceSite.com, Hawk Performance, TheRaceMarket.com, Kempthorn Auto Mall, UNICHIP, Lamin-X, RaceTech, and Grassroots Motorsports.
