< Back to News Home Team Sahlen's New Design On Course to Success After Laguna Seca

Posted (05/05/2005) - Team Sahlen could possibly be headed towards a new evolution of the Porsche GT3 Cup car. Recent changes Team Sahlen engineers made to the Grand Touring (GT) class car gave way for an impressive new look and increased speed to No. 43. The team traveled this past weekend to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the fourth ROLEX Grand American race of the season. Their newly engineered and designed front end and rear quarter panels created quite a stir among fans attending the Road and Track 250.

"It is a different approach to the Porsche GT3 Cup and this was our first run at it. We are still in the development stages but after this weekend we have learned that we are taking a very effective step in making the car quicker on the track. We are also going to be able to provide the same advantages to other Porsche teams in the series," stated Wayne Nonnamaker of Team Sahlen.

Team Sahlen's No. 43 car took fourth in Friday's qualifying session, the best the team has seen so far this season. Wayne Nonnamaker drove the car during qualifying and started the race for his bother, Will. The Road and Track 250 was a very aggressive race and despite several near misses with Daytona Prototypes, the Nonnamaker duo finished 10th in the Grand Touring (GT) class.

"We lost a lap mid race because of an unlucky yellow," commented Wayne Nonnamaker. "However our car was within three tenths of a second of the fastest race lap by a Porsche. That was turned in by Randy Pobst in a TPC Racing car. Randy is very talented and has been to this track many times. Will and I have never driven Laguna before, so I think our development must be headed in the right direction."

Tomy Drissi jumped behind the wheel as a Team Sahlen driver for the first time. With co-driver Joe Nonnamaker the two finished the race in 16th place. Drissi is a Trans Am racer who hails from Hollywood, California.

Despite all the spins and collisions throughout the course of a very aggressively played race, both Team Sahlen cars finished with minimal damage. They now return home to prepare their ROLEX GT cars for their next ROLEX race at Mont Tremblant.

"Our year all in all has been successful so far but this is taking us to another level competitively," stated Will Nonnamaker. The Nonnamaker brothers, after the Road and Track 250, are now tied for 8th in driver point standings. The team itself is currently 7th.

Team Sahlen was supported this past weekend Team Sahlen's 2005 ROLEX effort is supported by HRPWorld.com, TheRaceSite.com, Hawk Performance, TheRaceMarket.com, Kempthorn Auto Mall, UNICHIP, Lamin-X, RaceTech, and Grassroots Motorsports.

Grand American teams and Porsche enthusiasts alike will have an opportunity to purchase left and right rear quarter panels for the Porsche GT3 Cup, identical to what Team Sahlen has developed. These carbon fiber quarter panels have a professionally designed flare that increases the overall body width to the maximum allowed by Grand Am Rolex rules. Anyone interested in purchasing these should contact Phoenix Promotions, Inc. account manager, Kelly Dougan, via email at Kelly@phoenixpromotions.com.
