< Back to News Home Team Sahlen's Gonzalez is "Hometown Favorite" for Dominican Race

Posted (03/09/2005) - Team Sahlen driver and Puerto Rican native Victor Gonzalez, Jr. is more than excited about the upcoming Grand-Am Cup race in the Dominican Republic.

"This race will be one of the most memorable of my career. Having an opportunity to drive at a track so close to home with Team Sahlen and Grand American is so exciting. I am ready to have a big weekend." Gonzalez said recently.

There is no doubt that this big weekend could land Gonzalez a spot on the podium. Gonzalez will not only be driving for last season's Grand-Am Cup Grand Sport (GS) champions but will be on track he is quite familiar with.

"I consider Autodromo las Americas to be my home track in the Grand-Am Cup series and I tested there not too long ago. There were a lot of people out there to watch and it got me so excited. I expect to have a lot of family and friends there, too," Gonzalez added.

Gonzalez drove a GT-1 race car at the Autodromo las Americas track in 2003. He also worked on the development of a BMW E46 Touring Car for EAG Motorsports in the Dominican Republic. Within that program he won four races and achieved pole position in every race.

Also during 2003 Gonzalez qualified on pole, set a track record, landed a podium finish at the Milwaukee Mile in the Barber Dodge Pro series. In 2004 Gonzalez drove in the GT championship in Puerto Rico and in the Dominican Republic in a GT-1 race car.

Gonzalez drove with Team Sahlen's 2004 effort at Homestead and has already made a mark in the series and Team Sahlen in 2005. For the ROLEX 24 at Daytona Gonzalez took a top ten finish in the Team Sahlen ROLEX Grand Touring (GT) car.

Gonzalez plans to make the most out of his trip to Santo Domingo by not only finishing on the podium but meeting with fans and supporters. He also plans on visiting children in hospitals. Gonzalez is a longtime supporter of charities dedicated to helping children. In addition he has been an active participant in Racing for Kids.

"This is a big race for me. I am really looking forward to taking the track in front of my family and friends and especially with Team Sahlen," states Gonzalez.

Team Sahlen will be making the 1,600 mile journey to the Dominican Republic with support from HRPWorld.com, TheRaceSite.com, Hawk Performance, TheRaceMarket.com, Kempthorn Auto Mall, UNICHIP, Lamin-X, RaceTech, Holliday Canopies, and Grassroots Motorsports.
