< Back to News Home Stanton and TheRaceSite.com Pursue Cup Championship at Barber

Posted (10/07/2004) - Birmingham, AL - TheRaceSite.com Racing not only leads the Grand-Am Cup team point standings but driver Craig Stanton is in a driver points battle. The point standings are uncomfortably close heading into the Barber 250. That leaves one thing to be said, this weekend will be an exciting race for the Grand-Am Cup and especially Porsche fans.

TheRaceSite.com Racing No. 44 car leads the current second place team, Schuitemaker Motorsports by sixteen points. With two races left TheRaceSite.com needs to secure a podium finish to maintain a reasonable lead on the Schuitemaker team. In addition, currently in third place is TheRaceSite.com No. 43 car and they are closing in on Schuitemaker. No. 43 trails the Schuitemaker car by only two points and hopes to make a move at the Barber race.

"Barber has suited our cars well in the past but it is a different year. We have had some minor complications over the last few races but we are in the right direction for our set up and understanding the track. Craig and David are great Porsche drivers. We need to do well here and I think we can. It is going to be a great race for teams and fans alike," states crew chief Mike Thomas.

Stanton trails former co-driver Terry Borcheller by a mere seven points heading into the Barber race. Stanton has five first place finishes in the Porsche 996's for 2004, more than anyone on the track this season. Stanton and current co-driver David Murry had a chance to prove their abilities at last week's race at Virginia International Raceway but know what it will take to finish at the top for the upcoming Barber race.

At VIR Murry and Stanton did all they could to keep the Powell Motorsports Cadillac at bay. With the lead switching several times Murry was finally able to take the No. 11 Cadillac at lap 40 and went on to win the race. Stanton and Murry expect nothing less from themselves or their competitors.

"This point chase is getting very, very close. I am going to drive as hard as I can and do all that I can to make this a great race for the championship. I knew all year it would come down to the last laps at California," says Stanton.

TheRaceSite.com racing defends their Grand-Am Cup Grand Sport title with support from HRPworld.com, HAWK Performance, Kempthorn Auto Mall, SpeedSource, SpeedGroup International, TheRaceMarket.com, North Jersey Dermatology Center, Buddy Stubbs' Harley Davidson, Grassroots Motorsports Magazine and 9 Magazine.
