< Back to News Home Craig Stanton - Fit to Drive

Posted (07/30/2004) - While every professional race driver takes his physical fitness seriously. Craig Stanton, who drives TheRaceSite.com Racing's No. 44 HRPWorld.com supported Porsche Porsche 911 in the GS class with David Murry, has become widely recognized as the most fit driver in the Grand Amercian paddock. How, in a garage area full of health-conscious and workout oriented people, can Stanton claim such fame? The 4X GS winner in 2004 - has a training regiment that sets him at the top echelon of athletes not only in motorsports, but in any sport around the world.

With 27 triathlons behind him, Stanton who lives and trains in Long Beach, Calif., doesn't see the triathlons as an event to train for, but, instead, a means to train for his driving.

On a typical week, a week without a Grand-Am Cup race, Stanton will spend an average of six hours working out every day of the week broken between morning and afternoon sessions. The routine will balance hard training days (two-three hours of road or mountain biking, stairs training and obstacle course runs) with lighter days that include only weight training, a one hour run, an hour and a half to two hour bike ride and a one hour spinning class- a class that combines aspects of traditional aerobics' classes on a stationary bicycle led by an instructor. For 'relaxation' on his off day, Stanton will either surf or spend time on the rock climbing wall in his backyard.

If the former moto and super-cross rider is scheduled to race, he continues the same regiment but at a reduced level so that he peaks on race day. The process allows his body to remain at the same level throughout the racing season reducing the spikes in training that other drivers face during the hectic schedule of sports car racing.

To make the most of his physical training, Stanton maintains a healthy diet and races a 125 cc shifter racing kart two or three times a week to keep his mind sharp for driving.

Craig's wife, Joy, is always by his side at the track offering support and training advice. Joy is a personal fitness trainer by trade and helps her husband maximize his physical routine for the hot summer months when the Grand-Am Cup races the majority of its sports car endurance events.

TheRaceSite.com's title defending campaign in the Grand-Am Cup GS class is a reality due to the amazing support from HRPworld.com, HAWK Performance, Kempthorn Auto Mall, SpeedSource, TheRaceMarket.com, North Jersey Dermatology Center, Buddy Stubbs' Harley Davidson, Grassroots Motorsports Magazine and 9 Magazine.
