< Back to News Home Stanton Looking for Three Peat in Cup

Posted (04/04/2004) - It is not often that a professional athlete finds himself in nearly perfect-sync with his sport so early in the season. However, Craig Stanton, who knows a little bit about finishing on top of professional endurances races, finds himself in that enviable position. The Long Beach, Calif. native, who has competed in 27 triathlons, has run in five races in 2004 ranging in length from two hours, 45-minutes to 24 hours. He has not failed to finish an event yet.

In fact, this season, the easy-going Californian has won in three of the five races he has entered and finished on the podium in a fourth.
Drawing from that success, Stanton will again drive the No. 44 TheRaceSite.com Porsche 996 with Gainesville Georgia's Terry Borcheller in the Grand Sport (GS) class of Friday's Grand-Am Cup Series' Phoenix Twin 200s. The duet is perfect in 2004 Grand-Am Cup competition to-date.
The three-hour event is the third Grand-Am Cup race of the season and Stanton and Borcheller have won both of the proceeding events in convincing fashion.

Stanton, who is one of the most successful drivers in Grand American-sanctioned events in 2004, will co-drive with David Murry in the No. 16 AASCO Motorsports' Porsche in Saturday night's Food City 250.
In that event, Stanton and Murry will attempt to back-up the team's Rolex Series' Homestead-Miami Speedway (HMS) victory with a second SGS class victory at PIR.

The Food City 250 Rolex Series event, the premier event of the weekend, will be broadcast live on SPEED Channel at 9 pm (ET), Saturday April 10.

The GS-class race of the Grand-Am Cup Series will be shown at 6 pm (ET) on April 18. Both events can be followed live on timing and scoring at www.grandamerican.com.

Craig Stanton, about racing for the three-peat at Phoenix: "Terry and I have found ourselves with a little bit of momentum here in the 2004 season of the Grand-Am Cup. It puts us in a good position going into the 250 at Phoenix. Everyone is really, really excited about where we are.
It's going to be great seeing the cars under the lights and the fans are going to get a great show. The first two races were terrific and I don't see any reason that this race will be any different. I'm really eager to get out there and race the Nonnamaker's TheRaceSite.com Porsche this weekend."

Since moving from moto-cross/super-cross to automobiles in 1986, Stanton has positioned himself as one of the premier drivers in sports car racing. A desire to win in all kinds of machines has led to drives in closed and open cockpit sports cars, sedans, NASCAR stock cars, open wheel formula cars and midgets and in off-road competition. He has won three championships and a Driver of the Year award in Sports Renault and is the 1997 Speedvision Cup Rising Star Award winner. Stanton began competing in the top echelon of sports car racing in 1999 and has class wins in both the Grand-Am and ALMS. He takes his fitness training very seriously with the goal of being the fittest race driver in the world and has competed in 27 triathlons in his career.
