< Back to News Home Grand Am Cup Rising Star of the Year Grand Sport II - Joe Nonnamaker

Posted (01/26/2004) - TheRaceSite.com recently recognized various talents in the Grand Am Cup. The Phoenix team was recognized for various awards. Below you will read the official release from TheRaceSite.com:

At the end of the 2003 season we asked journalists, participants, and officials to vote for various awards in the Grand Am Cup season. The 2003 awards mark the third consecutive year that TheRaceSite.com has awarded these trophies.

The Rising Star honor is for the driver that showed the most potential for a bright future in sports car racing. Past Driver Champions (in a pro series) and past Rising Stars were excluded from the ballot.

After tabulating all the votes, Joe Nonnamaker was awarded the 2003 Grand Am Cup Grand Sport II Rising Star of the Year Award. Joe Nonnamaker has been racing for over two decades and has scored many professional wins, but his 2003 Grand Sport II Championship was the first of his career.

Joe came into the 2003 season with one win in the 2002 season. In the previous twenty years of racing he had scored twelve professional wins, but had never scored that elusive Professional Championship. In 2003 he moved from the Grand Sport I Planet Earth Motorsports Corvette to the Grand Sport II Planet Earth Motorsports Porsche. Along with youngest son Wayne, Joe scored four wins and eight podiums.

Phoenix Promotions, the team responsible for the preparation of both the Planet Earth Motorsports effort and TheRaceSite.com Racing, has scored four Rising Star of the Year Awards now. Bill Pate, who founded the team, won it during the Firestone Firehawk days in 1991. Will Nonnamaker won it during the IMSA Endurance Challenge in 1996. Tony Nuzzo won the award in 2002 in the Sport Touring class.

As Joe heads into the 2004 season he finds himself with two rides: He will co-drive the Super Grand Sport class Planet Earth Motorsports Porsche with his oldest son, Will Nonnamaker. In addition he will defend his 2003 Grand Sport Championship with his son Wayne in TheRaceSite.com Racing Porsche.

Past winners of the award include:
2001 GSII Rising Star = Dave Haskell
2002 GSII Rising Star = John Sturm // Forrest Barber
